It didn’t take long for the first Texas basketball transfer of the offseason to find his next home out of the portal. Former Texas freshman guard and blue-chip recruit Rowan Brumbaugh announced on Twitter on the evening of April 10 that he is committing to the Georgetown Hoyas and new head coach Ed Cooley out of the transfer portal.

Head coach Rodney Terry and the Longhorns suffered their first portal loss of this offseason on April 7, when it was reported that Brumbaugh was transferring from Texas.

Brumbaugh becomes the third portal addition of the offseason for the former Providence Friars head coach Cooley and the Hoyas. Cooley is rebuilding the Georgetown roster, which will essentially be turning over all its personnel with nine scholarship players departing via the portal in the 2023 class.

Cooley and Brumbaugh are reconnecting after the two parties initially formed a relationship when Providence was recruiting the four-star point guard out of Northfield Mount Hermon High School in Massachusetts. Cooley and the Friars offered Brumbaugh out of high school in the 2022 class.

Georgetown is also a place that is both close to home and familiar to Brumbaugh. He visited Georgetown when former head coach Patrick Ewing and the Hoyas were recruiting him out of high school.

Moreover, Brumbaugh was initially a four-star point guard that committed to the Northwestern Wildcats and head coach Chris Collins out of high school in the 2022 class. But former Texas head coach Chris Beard wound up swinging this recruitment late in the 2022 cycle, eventually flipping Brumbaugh’s commitment from Northwestern in December 2021.

Brumbaugh should have a chance to compete for at least a rotational spot in Georgetown’s backcourt unit heading into the 2023-24 season. He’s got a lot of talent and potential that has yet to be tapped into.

During his true freshman campaign at Texas during the 2022-23 season, Brumbaugh took a redshirt as he sat behind experienced guards such as senior Marcus Carr, senior Sir’Jabari Rice, and sophomore Tyrese Hunter.

Since Brumbaugh took a redshirt year during the 2022-23 campaign, he heads to Georgetown with all four years of eligibility remaining.

Texas finished up the 2022-23 season with a record of 29-9 (12-6 Big 12) following a loss to the five-seed Miami Hurricanes in the Elite Eight. Terry and the Longhorns are now focusing on rebuilding a roster that is losing a lot of production from last year’s squad early this offseason.
