Texas Football: 3 players that shined in final week of spring practice
Savion Red, RB
Over and over again, we’ve heard about how the converted slot wide receiver and sophomore running back Savion Red has stood out in spring practice. Red has shined in multiple phases of the game this spring since moving to the running back position.
It sounds like he’s maintained his effectiveness as a receiver out of the backfield in the flats and even on designed routes. He’s also become a more effective weapon in space, regardless of whether he’s getting the ball as a running back out of the backfield or while running a route after being motioned out.
We also got this beauty of a clip from Red bouncing a run outside and outrunning the defense to the pylon for a touchdown in team drills from last week. You can even see the former junior All-American Texas running back and soon-to-be first-round 2023 NFL Draft pick Bijan Robinson going crazy reacting to that nice run by Red.
Red has performed at a high enough level this spring to move pretty far up the spring depth chart at the position in terms of the distribution of practice reps. At the outset of spring camp, Red was getting reps at the running back position behind some former walk-ons. He’s now moved up to mostly getting reps with the third-team in the last couple of weeks.
We’ve even heard about him getting some second-team reps out of the backfield in team drills in the last 10 days or so.
If you’re looking for one play to hang your hat on that Red reportedly made in the final spring practice on April 13, he apparently had a nice run where he ran over senior All-Big 12 linebacker Jaylan Ford.
