Texas Football: 3 Horns transfer departures that became studs in the NFL
Keaontay Ingram, RB*
The most recent transfer departure from the Longhorns on this list that has made valued contributions in the NFL in the last couple of decades is former Texas starting running back Keaontay Ingram. The 6-foot and 215-pound Ingram was recruited to Texas as a blue-chip running back prospect in the 2018 class out of Carthage High School.
Ingram was an immediate-impact running back for Texas’ offense as a true freshman during the 2018 season, rushing for more than 700 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. He also managed nearly 900 total yards and five total scores as a freshman in 2018.
In 2019, Ingram was even more effective on the ground for former Texas head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns. He amassed nearly 1,100 total yards and 10 total touchdowns during a career year production-wise as a sophomore. But the fortunes would turn against Ingram at Texas in 2020. He was pushed for Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnso for starting reps out of the backfield.
And Ingram wound up transferring after playing just six games and rushing for a little more than 200 yards for the Longhorns during the 2020 season.
He landed with the USC Trojans ahead of the 2021 season, where he was a productive back for one campaign. Ingram posted more than 1,000 total yards for the second time in his collegiate career during the 2021 season at USC. A strong senior campaign at USC landed Ingram a sixth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals.
Ingram made limited contributions to the Cardinals’ offense as a rookie in 2022, which is why there is an asterisk next to his name on this list. He registered nearly 100 total yards from scrimmage and one rushing score last season. But Ingram will be in a spot to push James Conner and Corey Clement for reps out of the backfield as he looks to break through in his second year in the league in 2023.
