The most talented among the underclassmen at defensive back for the Longhorns this year is the former blue-chip recruit out of South Oak Cliff High School and true freshman cornerback Malik Muhammad. Texas’ highest-rated cornerback recruit via the high school ranks in more than a decade made a big splash when he arrived on campus this spring.

Muhammad brought an energy to the locker room that stood out right away from what we heard earlier in the semester. It sounded like Muhammad brought a certain confidence and swagger during winter workouts that showed the type of player and leader he could become for this program on and off the field.

The idea that Muhammad could go into the fall vying for a starting spot at field corner in the midst of a position group that is so loaded for the Longhorns says a lot about the impression he’s made on his teammates and the coaches. Muhammad showed on the practice field this spring and in scrimmage settings that he was capable of mentally and physically competing with the best wideouts Texas has in the fold this year.

If Muhammad is able to hang with the level of competition that Texas brings to the table at wide receiver, I would only assume that he’ll be ready to compete in the Big 12 this fall. Considering Texas probably has the most talented and deepest wide receiver room in the Big 12 in 2023, Muhammad should head into the fall well-prepared to make an early impact on the field.
