Big 12 Football: 2 more PAC-12 conference expansion after CU, Arizona
Oregon
The two biggest fish remaining in the PAC-12 after the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins bolted for the Big Ten are the Washington Huskies and Oregon Ducks. Washington and Oregon are not only the two most valuable football programs but also the two biggest and most appealing brands among the remaining PAC-12 members.
I’ve mentioned this before when discussing this round of hypothetical conference expansion that Oregon and Washington would obviously be fantastic additions to the Big 12 if it could get both in the mix. It’s just hard to imagine the Big 12 pulling off that feat, especially with the odd number of teams that it would have in the mix with these two joining along with the hypothetical trio of Arizona, Arizona State, and Colorado.
If the Big 12 had to choose one of Washington and Oregon, though, I think the best option would be the Ducks. That is a stance I’ve stood by for a couple of months now.
Oregon is the more valuable and successful football program when compared to Washington. According to Yahoo Sports, Oregon is the 16th most valuable college football program in the country in 2023 (with $48.1 million in revenue) while Washington is 19th ($45.5 million in revenue).
It’s also worth noting that Oregon has more PAC-12 titles in football and NCAA Tournament appearances in men’s basketball than Washington does in the last decade.
All in all, if the Big 12 could somehow get its hands on both Oregon and Washington in this round of conference realignment while keeping the numbers even, that would obviously be the ideal situation. But being able to get even one of these two would be a fantastic addition to the Big 12 while the PAC-12 is falling apart.
