The top-rated defensive line target for Texas football in the 2024 recruiting class, elite five-star Lafayette (LA) Acadiana product Dominick McKinley, has UT squarely in the mix as he’s starting to focus on a few top contenders heading into the fall.

Texas and defensive line coach Bo Davis are making McKinley their top out-of-state priority in the 2024 class this summer. And it appears that Davis and the Longhorns have made a big impression on McKinley and his camp since he officially visited campus last month.

McKinley and his mom gave the Texas visit high marks, specifically praising the job that Davis and the Longhorns staff did with the experience during their official trip from June 23-25.

Horns247 reported on July 10 (paid content) that McKinley has the “Longhorns on his shortlist” of schools he’s considering after his summer official visits. McKinley did include Texas in his top six that he dropped on May 31, along with the Texas A&M Aggies, LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, Georgia Bulldogs, and Ohio State Buckeyes.

But this Horns247 report mentions that the “true contenders” in the race to land a commitment from McKinley heading into the fall are Texas, LSU, and Oklahoma. Texas A&M was specifically omitted by this source, despite being included in McKinley’s top six.

Texas has hosted McKinley on campus twice this offseason. The first was an unofficial visit on Jan. 21 for the first Junior Day of the offseason. The most recent was the official visit on the last weekend of June.

McKinley also took official visits to Ohio State (June 2), Texas A&M (June 9), and Oklahoma (June 16) this summer. It sounds like official visits this fall are possible for McKinley to see LSU, Georgia, and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

There is still a long way to go in this recruitment, as McKinley is expected to make a decision closer to the Early Signing Period in December. At the moment, though, Texas is in a good spot among the top schools for the top-rated out-of-state priority defensive lineman in the 2024 class.
