The top priority for Texas football in the 2024 recruiting class appears to be closing in on a decision date. The elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher priority Colin Simmons posted on Twitter late in the morning of July 19 that he has a “commitment date coming soon”.

As the must-get recruit in the 2024 class for the Longhorns, Simmons obviously has a ton of attention on his recruitment this summer.

Texas fans have eagerly awaited a potential decision date from the No. 1 edge rusher recruit in the nation in the 2024 class since he had a successful official visit to Texas from June 23-25. Simmons started trending to Texas during his late-June official visit to Austin.

In late June, three On3 analysts/reporters entered RPM picks with high confidence levels projecting Simmons’ commitment to Texas.

And since June 24, four Rivals FutureCasts and one 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction were entered, all projecting Simmons’ pledge to the Longhorns. None of the forecasts for Simmons’ commitment in the last month had him landing anywhere but Texas.

Simmons potentially gearing up for a last round of visits

Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports reported that Simmons plans to take late-summer visits to Baton Rouge, LA, and College Station, TX, to see the LSU Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies.

Since the spring, Simmons has taken visits to see the Alabama Crimson Tide (June 16), SMU Mustangs (June 13), LSU (April 22), TCU Horned Frogs (April 7), Miami Hurricanes (June 9), Texas A&M (April 1), Oregon Ducks (June 20), and Florida Gators (April 13).

LSU has fallen behind Texas in the race for the No. 1 2024 EDGE

Earlier this offseason, many looked at LSU as the favorite in the race to land a commitment from Simmons. But Texas made a big move during Simmons’ late-June official visit to Austin and took the lead in this recruitment.

Texas now appears to hold a sizeable lead in this recruitment over Texas A&M and LSU, who are fighting it out for second place.

Landing Simmons would be the biggest win of the 2024 cycle for Texas

If Texas can seal the deal with Simmons this summer, that would be a massive win for head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class. It could open up the floodgates for some of the other outstanding top-priority 2024 recruits to jump in this class for the Longhorns.

Some of Texas’ other top priority defensive recruits in the 2024 class this summer are five-star Waco (TX) Connally cornerback Kobe Black, four-star Lancaster (TX) defensive back Corian Gipson, and five-star Lafayette (LA) Acadiana defensive lineman Dominick McKinley.
