Texas football is hitting a critical stretch on the recruiting trail this summer in the 2024 class. Texas has a host of its top-priority recruits in the 2024 class that are expected to make decisions at some point in the next month.

Among the top priorities for the Longhorns in the 2024 class that is expected to decide soon is the elite five-star Lafayette (LA) Acadiana defensive lineman Dominick McKinley. The 6-foot-5 and 290-pound Louisiana defensive lineman has Texas among his top schools after a successful official visit to Austin last month.

Defensive line coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns are making McKinley their top priority in the trenches in the 2024 class late this summer. McKinley is the elite defensive lineman that Davis and the Longhorns need to round out this position group in the 2024 class heading into the fall.

And it sounds like Texas is in a good spot among the top schools for McKinley as we draw closer to a decision date for the elite Louisiana defensive lineman.

Horns247 reported on July 25 (paid content) that Texas and the Oklahoma Sooners are in the “pole position” in the race to land a commitment from McKinley late this summer. This report also notes that the LSU Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies are fighting for positioning behind Texas and Oklahoma among McKinley’s top group of schools.

McKinley officially visited Texas, Texas A&M, and OU in June

Last month, McKinley took official visits to see Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma. He also officially visited Columbus, OH, to see the Ohio State Buckeyes in early June.

McKinley hasn’t taken an official visit to Baton Rouge to see the in-state Tigers yet. But he is making the trip to Baton Rouge this week to see LSU for the Bayou Splash. He is one of a multitude of elite Texas recruits in the 2024 and 2025 classes set to see Baton Rouge this week, including five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons, four-star John Ehret cornerback Wardell Mack, and five-star Duncanville wide receiver Dakorien Moore.

If Texas can land McKinley’s commitment before the start of his senior season at Acadiana High School, that should round out recruiting along the defensive line in the 2024 class. But Oklahoma has momentum on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class late this summer, specifically along the defensive line after landing four-star Texas target and IMG Academy DL Jayden Jackson a couple of weeks ago.
