There is a lot of movement on the recruiting trail late this summer for Texas football in the 2024 class. And there isn’t a more critical position group with multiple priority recruits being watched right now for Texas in the 2024 class than defensive back.

Texas is prioritizing the recruitments of the elite five-star Waco (TX) Connally cornerback Kobe Black and high-four-star Marrero (LA) John Ehret cornerback Wardell Mack. Black abruptly visited Austin last week amid the pool party/BBQ Bash on July 28.

And while Mack didn’t make a late-July visit to Texas like Black did last week, the Longhorns still sit in a good spot for the elite cornerback recruit out of the Boot. In fact, Texas got another forecast in its favor to land Mack’s commitment.

On3’s Sam Spiegelman entered an RPM pick on July 30, projecting Mack’s commitment to Texas (six out of 10 confidence). This is the first On3 RPM pick for Texas to land Mack. The other On3 RPM picks for Mack both project his commitment to the LSU Tigers. But neither of those forecasts for LSU from On3 experts/insiders came during the summer.

It’s also worth noting that two of the three expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions predict Mack’s commitment to Texas over LSU and the Florida Gators. One crystal ball was also entered on July 28, projecting Mack’s commitment to LSU.

Mack on the fringe of a “must-get” DB recruit for Texas in the 2024 class

After Texas missed on high-four-star Lancaster (TX) defensive back Corian Gipson and four-star Temple (TX) Lake Belton cornerback Selman Bridges earlier this summer, Mack and Black are two of the most important DB recruits in the 2024 class for the Longhorns. Texas is in an excellent spot for Black coming out of the summer visit season.

And it looks like Mack’s recruitment will come down to a battle between Texas and Florida, with LSU in third place. Some reporters out there think LSU is in a better spot than third place in the race to land a commitment from Mack. But that’s not what we’ve heard and read from the most recent reports since Mack’s unofficial trip to Florida last weekend concluded.

Since Mack is expected to announce before the end of summer, he is likely the next big DB target on commitment watch for the Longhorns in the 2024 class in the coming weeks.
