One of the hottest names right now on the recruiting trail for Texas football in the 2024 class is the elite five-star Waco (TX) Connally cornerback Kobe Black. Texas has started to trend as the pick for Black after landing a commitment from the elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons on Aug. 10.

Black is the top-priority recruit for the Longhorns in the 2024 class late this summer after hauling in their “must-get” prospect for the cycle with Simmons committing last week.

The No. 1 cornerback recruit in Texas in the 2024 class is also considered a “must-get” recruit for the Longhorns after missing on high-four-star Marrero (LA) John Ehret cornerback Wardell Mack. The highly-touted Louisiana native corner, Mack, picked the Florida Gators over Texas on Aug. 14.

Texas and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph must fill two spots with starting-caliber corners in the 2024 class. They already have one of those spots filled in the 2024 class with the underrated blue-chip cornerback out of Arizona, Scottsdale Desert Mountain four-star Santana Wilson.

It certainly looks like things are trending in the right direction for the Longhorns in the race to land a commitment from Black late this summer.247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong reported on Aug. 15 that the “buzz is overwhelming” for Texas in this recruitment.

On Aug. 14, Wiltfong, 247Sports national recruiting analyst Mike Roach, and Horns247 insider Hank South joined fellow Horns247 insider Jordan Scruggs in entering Crystal Ball Predictions projecting Black’s commitment to Texas.

The infamous Fong crystal ball is a notable signal that Black is firmly trending in Texas’ favor.

Texas has multiple factors working in its favor for Black

The writing is on the wall that Texas is emerging as the overwhelming favorite in the race to land a commitment from Black. Joseph and head coach Steve Sarkisian have fantastic relationships with Black.

Texas also knocked it out of the park during Black’s late-June official visit to Austin. It’s also worth noting that he made a return visit to Texas unofficially in late July.

Another factor working in Texas’ favor in this recruitment is Simmons’ commitment. Simmons jumping into this class for the Longhorns impacted Black in a big way since these two are close and have communicated often throughout the offseason.

Simmons told the media after committing to Texas last week that recruiting Black was his “top priority” assisting the Longhorns on the trail.

Black doesn’t have a decision timeline that he’s made public. Various reports have touched on the possibility of Black announcing before the start of his senior season. If he follows the trends of other top blue-chip recruits in Texas in the 2024 class, such as Simmons and five-star Timpson athlete Terry Bussey, Black could move up his decision timeline before the start of his senior season at Connally High School in a couple of weeks.
