Earlier this week, Texas football officially reached the midway point of the fall camp calendar before the start of the 2023 season. This is a big week for Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian as we’re between the two scrimmages that will take place in training camp.

Texas took part in the first scrimmage of training camp last weekend. Sark and the Longhorns saw many positives emerge from the first fall scrimmage last weekend, including avoiding any major injuries.

True freshmen with stock on the rise for Texas football after first half of fall camp

This coming weekend, the Longhorns will participate in the second and final scrimmage of fall camp before the start of the 2023 season.

One of the most exciting parts of fall camp this year for the Longhorns is the emergence of so many talented true freshmen. Sark and this staff recruited well in the 2023 class, which saw them bring in a plethora of immediate-impact recruits from the high school ranks.

Some of those immediate impact 2023 signees for the Longhorns are standing out right away in fall camp. Here’s a look at three true freshmen for the Longhorns with rising stock after the first half of fall camp.

Johntay Cook II, WR

Among the true freshmen that received a ton of praise through the first half of training camp is the former five-star recruit out of DeSoto High School, wide receiver Johntay Cook II. In the first two weeks of training camp, Cook impressed in individual and team drills with his quickness, technical route running, and reliable hands.

He looked the part of someone that would be an immediate contributor during spring ball, but Cook has taken his game to new heights in training camp. Cook has solidified himself in the four or five-man rotation that Sark and the Longhorns will operate with on offense this fall.

Texas truly goes six or seven wideouts deep with true freshmen such as Cook and DeAndre Moore Jr. stepping up since spring ball.

Some of the highlights for Cook through the first half of training camp include a touchdown catch in the first fall scrimmage last weekend and a reported deep ball that he burned an opposing DB on during the media viewing window in the first week of practice.
