Texas Football: 3 true freshmen with rising stock halfway through fall camp
Malik Muhammad, CB
The true freshman defensive back that has stood out the most in the first half of training camp is the former high-four-star recruit out of South Oak Cliff High School, cornerback Malik Muhammad. The 6-foot and 180-pound true freshman corner out of South Dallas has looked the part of an immediate contributor bound to lock down a spot in the two-deep at either corner position heading into the season.
Even some practice and scrimmage reports through the first half of fall camp have mentioned Muhammad as the best cover corner in this Longhorn CB room. He was also tabbed in multiple reports last weekend coming out of the first scrimmage of fall camp, that Muhammad was the MVP.
Muhammad came up with a pick-six in last weekend’s fall scrimmage and forced a fumble.
He has legitimately pushed for starting reps at the field corner position in the first half of fall practice. If Muhammad keeps making the type of plays he has in coverage and chasing down the ball carrier in space, he will get starter-level reps during the season.
Texas is showing the future of the program in the secondary in fall camp between top SEC-caliber talents in Muhammad and true freshman safety Derek Williams. But Muhammad stole the show among the young defensive backs in the first half of training camp.
