Between season openers and late-summer scrimmages, a handful of Texas football commits, and targets were on the recruiting trail in action from the 2024 and 2025 classes this week and this weekend. Next weekend will be the first with the bulk of Texas commits and targets on the recruiting trail in live-game action.

Top Texas commits such as five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons, four-star 2025 Saraland (AL) quarterback KJ Lacey, and four-star Phoenix (AZ) Mountain Pointe running back Christian Clark open up their respective regular seasons on Aug. 25. Plenty of other Texas commits also open up their seasons on Aug. 25.

This week’s biggest game involving Texas commits saw No. 4 ranked IMG Academy travel to Nashville, TN, to face No. 19 ranked Lipscomb Academy on Aug. 18. Two Texas commits, four-star safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell and four-star running back Jerrick Gibson, starred for IMG Academy in that convincing 35-10 win over Lipscomb Academy on Aug. 18.

Here’s a look at three Texas commits that shined in scrimmage/live-game action this week.

Freddie Dubose Jr., WR

We have to give a nod to four-star wide receiver commit and Schertz (TX) Smithson Valley stud Freddie Dubose Jr. for his performance in his team’s scrimmage against O’Connor High School on Aug. 17.

On Smithson Valley’s first play from scrimmage, Dubose took one to the house for a 60+ yard touchdown catch. Dubose racked up more than 50 yards after the catch on that insane touchdown catch and run against O’Connor a few days ago.

It’s great to see Dubose seemingly back at full strength after suffering an unfortunate season-ending knee injury last year. If this is the type of wideout Texas is getting, Dubose is going to be an absolute steal for head coach Steve Sarkisian, new wide receivers coach Chris Jackson, and the Longhorns in the 2024 class.
