A top priority for Texas basketball and head coach Rodney Terry in the 2024 recruiting class just nailed down his official visit to Austin this week. Multiple reports (including one from Horns247) indicate that the elite five-star Dallas (TX) Link Academy shooting guard Tre Johnson will take a multi-day official visit to Texas starting Aug. 27.

Johnson’s official visit to Austin will last through Aug. 29.

We mentioned on the site on Aug. 21 that Terry and the Longhorns staff were working to lock in Johnson and fellow five-star priority target/Montverde Academy forward Liam McNeeley on their official visits to Austin. Johnson is the first of these two elite wing/forward prospects for the Longhorns in the 2024 class to schedule his official visit.

This will be the second of two official visits Johnson takes to Austin during his recruitment. Johnson’s first official visit to Texas was Sep. 17, 2022.

Johnson told 247Sports that his relationship with Terry is the biggest reason why Texas is one of the top schools in his recruitment. He has a longstanding relationship with Terry, Johnson’s primary recruiter for Texas for more than a year.

"“Rodney Terry has been talking to me and we always have had a good relationship. We are keeping it strong. He reaches out to talk about stuff outside of basketball.”"

Texas and Baylor look to be the top two schools for Johnson

Texas is one of four schools that Johnson has already officially visited. He’s also taken official visits to see the Kentucky Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks, and Baylor Bears. Johnson is scheduled to take an official visit to Tuscaloosa starting on Sep. 15 to see the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The buzz surrounding this recruitment this summer is that it will come down to a Texas vs. Baylor battle for Johnson’s commitment. Johnson has ties to Baylor and Texas, with Terry having coached his dad, who played for the Bears in college.

Kansas, Kentucky, Alabama, and the G-League are also possibilities for Johnson when it comes to decision time for the No. 4 recruit in the nation in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite.
