The most impactful of the true freshman wide receivers for the Longhorns is the former elite five-star recruit out of DeSoto High School in South Dallas, Johntay Cook II. Cook impressed throughout training camp thanks to his technical proficiency at wideout, reliable hands, and quick learning/work ethic.

Sark mentioned Cook among the standouts in fall camp multiple times in the last few weeks. What’s notable about Cook getting praised by Sark multiple times throughout fall camp is that it happened so early. This is what Sark had to say about Cook just a few days into fall practice during an Aug. 7 press conference.

"“I think Johntay is really trying to do what we’re asking him to do, and then when he doesn’t do it the right way he acknowledges that and tries to do it better the next time. I just think there’s a level of comfort for him schematically — I think what we are doing is making sense to him.”"

It’s crazy that Texas keeps finding these true freshmen that are ready to contribute right away. Getting these talented true freshmen in the mix to compete immediately for live-game reps isn’t based on skill alone. These freshmen have to show the work ethic and mentality that they’re ready to put their heads down and get to work immediately.

What Freshman All-American offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. did last offseason as a summer enrollee and first-year starter is not normal. But Banks’ attitude and experience as a Freshman All-American is helping translate to the current freshmen on campus heading into their first seasons at Texas.

Cook is one of those true freshmen that will contribute immediately this fall, along with Hill, running back CJ Baxter Jr., and Muhammad.

Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas reported on Aug. 13 (paid content) that Cook will be in the mix for an ample dose of live-game reps this fall at wideout and potentially as a punt returner.
