Texas women’s basketball survives late surge by UConn Huskies
By Brian Sweet
Texas women’s basketball welcomed one of the most decorated women’s basketball programs to Austin yesterday afternoon, the University of Connecticut Huskies. It’s considered to be the biggest non-conference game on the Longhorns schedule this season. Junior guard Rori Harmon rose to the occasion by dropping 27 points and 13 assists in the 80-68 win over the Huskies. Let’s take a look at some of the key players in yesterday’s game against the Huskies.
Texas women’s basketball key players vs. UConn: Rori Harmon
The Longhorns needed someone to step up and provide some offense against the Huskies yesterday. Harmon rose to that occasion by dropping 27 points and 13 assists. Harmon got to the basket for layups and made some huge three-point shots. Harmon sent a warning shot to the Big 12 yesterday that she will be a tough guard to defend against in conference play. It will be interesting to see how Long Beach State decides to guard her on Wednesday night.
Texas women’s basketball key players vs. UConn: Madison Booker
Freshman forward Madison Booker had another stellar performance yesterday afternoon. After showing how good she will be this season against Oral Roberts, she excelled on the court against the Huskies yesterday. After playing all 40 minutes yesterday, Booker finished with 20 points and four assists.
Yesterday was the most minutes Booker has played in her very young career at Texas. The surprising takeaway from her final stat line is she played all 40 minutes while only committing two fouls.
It’s good to know she can play all 40 minutes without getting into foul trouble. The Longhorns might need her to do that during conference play this season if they want to capture their final Big 12 title before going to the Southeastern Conference next year.
Texas women’s basketball upcoming matchup: Long Beach State
The Texas Longhorns are back at the Moody Center this Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. CT as they take on Long Beach State. The Longhorns will also be doing a teddy bear toss as well. Even though Long Beach State is not on the same skill level as UConn, go out and support the Longhorns. These women need your support as we get closer to the beginning of the Big 12 Conference schedule.
