Texas women’s basketball cruises to huge win over Long Beach State

The Texas women’s basketball team program is on cloud nine right now as they beat UConn for the first time on Sunday. They were also ranked number five in the AP Top 25 poll this week due to the win. The Longhorns received their rings at the Moody Center before the game tonight for winning the Big 12 title last season. The only way to celebrate is by beating your opponent by a mile.

The Longhorns did just that beating Long Beach State 106-62 at the Moody Center tonight. Senior forward Taylor Jones finished the game with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Let’s take a look at how the Longhorns did tonight.

Texas women’s basketball vs. Long Beach State Recap: First Quarter

The Texas Longhorns got off to a 5-0 run before Long Beach State made their first basket. Harmon would continue to help build the Longhorns’ lead as the first quarter progressed. Texas would lead 13-5 at the game’s first media timeout. Long Beach State came out of the media timeout and forced a turnover for an easy layup. They would take a timeout with 51 seconds left in the quarter to discuss their final-minute strategy. The Longhorns would lead 24-9 after the first quarter.

Texas women’s basketball vs. Long Beach State Recap: Second Quarter

Freshman forward Madison Booker and junior forward Aaliyah Moore scored seven points in the first couple of minutes of the second quarter. Long Beach State finally got on the board midway through the quarter. Texas would go on a 16-0 run before Long Beach State responded with their own basket. The Longhorns would lead 57-18 at the end of the second quarter and force 21 turnovers in the first half.

Long Beach State opened up the second period with two points. The Longhorns would get things going in the third quarter by scoring six points. Harmon produced most of the offense for the Longhorns in the early stages of the third quarter.

Texas Longhorns Head Coach Vic Schaefer would call a timeout midway through the third quarter after the Longhorns looked out of sorts on the court. The Longhorns would lead by 50 at the end of the third quarter. It looks like the starters might start coming out of the game in the fourth quarter.

Texas women’s basketball vs. Long Beach State Recap: Fourth Quarter

Harmon came out of the game in the first minute of the fourth quarter. It’s good to see the backups get some quality time in the fourth quarter in case a starter gets injured. They crossed the 100-point threshold with 3:45 remaining in the game. The Longhorns would win 106-62 over Long Beach State and will go to 10-0 on the season as they travel to Arizona next Wednesday to take on the Wildcats.
