A little over one week into the winter NCAA Transfer Portal window, Texas football has already landed three portal commitments since early this past weekend. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian hauled in a handful of transfers to sign to UT in the span of a little over 24 hours this past Friday and Saturday amid portal visits on campus on the Forty Acres.
Texas football putting the brakes on portal recruiting efforts amid Playoff preparation this week for the first round vs. Clemson
The first portal commitment for the Longhorns last week was former Utah Utes grad transfer senior punter Jack Bouwmeester. The All-Big 12 punter brings more stability and the ability to flip field position for Texas's special teams unit and Jeff Banks next season.
Texas also added key pieces to the defensive side of the ball in the way of immediate portal upgrades last weekend with Arkansas Razorbacks sophomore transfer linebacker Brad Spence and Purdue Boilermakers senior grad transfer defensive tackle Cole Brevard.
Spence and Brevard are two big additions at positions of need the Longhorns were looking to tackle along the front seven on defense this upcoming offseason.
But this portal cycle is just beginning for Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff for the winter transfer window. Texas still has a ways to go to fill remaining portal needs on each side of the ball.
Here are three grand prize portal targets the Longhorns are going after on the transfer market for the winter window.
Eric Singleton Jr., WR (Georgia Tech)
For the past couple of days, the Longhorns and wide receivers coach Chris Jackson hosted former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets speedy sophomore transfer wideout Eric Singleton Jr. Singleton, the No. 1 transfer wide receiver according to 247Sports, was the only portal visitor Texas hosted early this week.
The early returns coming from Singleton's visit from the portal for the past 48 hours has been mostly positive. The question remains how much the Longhorns were able to make him comfortable with the fit at Texas, and how competitive they are on the NIL front.
On3 entered an RPM projecting Singleton to transfer to Auburn from Georgia Tech, with NIL reportedly being a big factor involved in his portal recruitment.
Singleton brings game-changing speed and explosive play ability to the receiving corps, were he to wind up committing to the Longhorns from the portal for the 2025 season. We'll see if Texas can stem the tide and beat out Auburn and the Ole Miss Rebels for Singleton's transfer commitment.
