Texas Women's Basketball took on the Richmond Spiders at the Robins Center this afternoon. Coming off their dominant win against Southern on Wednesday night, Texas looked to continue their win streak before making it to conference play around the corner. Things were competitive in the first quarter until the Longhorns had a run at the end of the quarter. The Longhorns would beat the Spiders 65-54 to wrap up their weekend trip to Virginia.
Give credit to Richmond for giving the Longhorns a test in the first quarter. They looked like they were going to give the Longhorns a game today. However, it's hard to contain Sophomore forward Madison Booker and the Longhorns. Once they get going on offense and find a rhythm, it's game over for smaller colleges like Richmond. Let's examine the three takeaways from the win against the Richmond Spiders this afternoon.
Texas Women's Basketball: 3. Better three-point shooting in the first half for Texas
The Longhorns shot better from the three-point line against the Spiders this afternoon. Even though the Longhorns beat Southern on Wednesday night, they shot poorly in the first half. Today, the Longhorns shot 40% from the three-point line.
They were more selective about taking shots than heaving the ball toward the basket. It's the kind of three-point shooting they need to be consistent with. Conference play isn't too far away for the Longhorns. If they just take their time, Texas can be deadly with the three-point shooting.
Texas Women's Basketball: 2. Winning the turnover battle
The Longhorns were aggressive on defense this afternoon, forcing Richmond to turn the ball over repeatedly. The Longhorns forced Richmond to turn the ball 24 times. Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball Head Coach Vic Schaefer is known for his team's tough defense for 40 minutes. It shouldn't surprise anyone how many turnovers Texas forced this afternoon. If they keep forcing turnovers, it could help them when they start taking on SEC teams.
Texas Women's Basketball: 1. Can't stop Booker when she's focused
The last takeaway from today's win is when Booker is dialed in, she can't be stopped from scoring. Booker had her fifth 20-point game this season. She also recorded a 25-10 double-double as well. I could see her being a top WNBA prospect in a couple of seasons. Teams must move out of the way when she has the ball and moves towards the basket. Booker will be a factor in the SEC this season, and I can't wait to see how she takes on teams like South Carolina. The Longhorns are back in the Moody Center on Tuesday night, taking on La Salle University.
