Texas Women's Basketball returned home and hosted the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Moody Center on Sunday afternoon. The Longhorns narrowly escaped the Oklahoma Sooners to open their SEC conference schedule.
Some improvements needed to be made before today's game against the Razorbacks. It seems like Vic Schaefer and his coaching staff had them ready for today's game. The Longhorns would beat the Razorbacks 90-56 and move to 2-0 in conference play.
Senior forward Aaliyah Moore would lead the team in points with 17 this afternoon. Today's performance was light-years better than it was against the Sooners. Even though the Longhorns had a lot of missed shots, they dominated the boards.
The Longhorns out-rebounded the Razorbacks 27-11 at halftime. I hope the ladies get some rest this week because their next opponent will be a challenge. Here are the three takeaways from today's win over the Razorbacks.
Takeaways from Texas women's basketball's dominant win over Arkansas 3. Freshmen continue to show up
Jordan Lee and Justice Carlton have been the two biggest surprises of the season so far. Both freshmen have been a factor in many of the Longhorns' victories this season. These two ladies are the future of the program. They will get more playing time as the Longhorns continue their journey through their conference schedule. Both of them should be proud of how they played today. I can't wait to see how Schaefer uses them against teams like LSU and South Carolina.
2. Dominating the boards
The Longhorns performed much better on the boards this afternoon than in the last game against the Sooners. The Longhorns out-rebounded the Razorbacks 46-27 today. They also forced 25 steals as well. That's how the Longhorns will win games in the SEC this season.
If they can keep dominating the boards like they did today against the Razorbacks, the Longhorns should do well this season. Let's hope they can keep it up against a well-coached Alabama Crimson Tide team Thursday.
1.. Keep bringing that first-half energy
The first-half energy the Longhorns had this afternoon is something I want to see again. They came out of the gate and took it to the Razorbacks. You could see the defensive intensity from the ladies, and they made the Razorbacks pay on the boards by out-rebounding them.
That is how you will beat some of the best teams in the SEC. The Longhorns will have their first true test in this conference on Thursday against the Crimson Tide at the Moody Center.
