3 takeaways from Texas's win over DePaul
By Brian Sweet
Texas Women's Basketball took on the DePaul Blue Demons in Chicago, Illinois, tonight. You could tell the Longhorns had some nerves after the opening tip-off. That can be expected when you usually don't play a team like DePaul.
However, by the end of the first quarter, the Longhorns settled down and played how they typically do. The Longhorns would win 91-61 and remain undefeated. While the Wings had some good things happen tonight, there were some things they needed to work on.
One of those things they need to work on is scoring off turnovers. The Longhorns struggled with that in the first half of the game tonight.
If they want to beat high-caliber teams like Notre Dame and South Carolina, they must make their opponents pay for their mistakes on offense. However, they learned every game this season will not be a blowout. Staying calm while the Blue Demons were within ten will pay dividends later in the season. Here are the three takeaways from tonight's game against DePaul.
Takeaways from Texas women's basketball's win over DePaul: 3. Work on scoring off turnovers
I know Texas head coach Vic Schaefer and his coaching staff will discuss it at the next film session, but scoring on turnovers must be fixed. As the season goes along, Texas will take on tougher basketball teams.
Sometimes, those more formidable teams like South Carolina will be careless with the ball on offense. It would help if you capitalized on those turnovers to win and build a solid resume for March Madness later this season. That's all I have on improvements for the Longhorns now.
2. Taylor Jones had a good night on the boards
Senior forward Taylor Jones had a good night on the boards and putting offensive rebounds in the basket. On a night where Madison Booker and Rori Harmon are having a hard time making shots, it's good to have a player like Jones who can be the go-to player on offense.
Jones will have a massive role during the conference schedule. With tons of tall forwards in the SEC Conference, Jones must block them out and rebound the ball. She had a good game tonight, and it helped the Longhorns win.
1. Freshmen got more playing time tonight
The three freshmen got ample playing time in the second half of tonight's game. This is good for them because there could be an injury scenario where they must enter in the middle of the game against tough SEC opponents.
All three held their ground tonight against a good Blue Demons team. I'm sure there will be other non-conference games where we will see the freshman. The Longhorns will return to action on Wednesday as they take on Tarleton State at 11 a.m. CT.
