3 takeaways from Texas's win over James Madison
By Brian Sweet
Texas Women's Basketball took on James Madison University this afternoon. The Longhorns looked to put their loss against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the rearview mirror. After getting out to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter, the Longhorns destroyed James Madison to start a new win streak.
The Longhorns were making fewer turnovers and were taking better shots against the Dukes. Even though the Dukes aren't at the skill level the Longhorns are at, it's good to see Texas learning from their mistakes Thursday night.
Sophomore forward Madison Booker made better shooting decisions today, and I'm glad she's looking like the scorer Texas will need during conference play. You could say the same about Senior guard Rori Harmon, too.
Both of them look so much better than Thursday night. Even though the Longhorns didn't play a top-25 opponent today, sometimes you need a game like this to get back on track. Here are the three takeaways from the 93-62 win over James Madison this afternoon.
Takeaways from Texas women's basketball's win over JMU: 3. The Dynamic Duo is back
As I mentioned above, Harmon and Booker's great day on the court was one reason the Longhorns beat the Dukes this afternoon. Harmon finished with 19 points, while Booker finished with 21 points. The Longhorns' offense is unstoppable when these two players make their baskets.
If Harmon decides to enter the WNBA Draft, one team will get a talented guard to facilitate their offense. Let's see if the Dynamic Duo continues to dominate on the court this season.
2. Turnover battle
The Longhorns won the turnover battle against the Dukes today. Texas forced 17 turnovers while only turning the ball over nine times. That was a reason the Longhorns didn't do so well against the Fighting Irish on Thursday night.
They turned the ball over too many times, and the Fighting Irish converted on most of those turnovers. It was excellent to see the Longhorns be more disciplined with the ball this afternoon. Let's see if they can be disciplined against Southern University later this week.
1. Better shooting performance
The Longhorns couldn't stop making baskets today against the Dukes. They had a better field goal percentage than they did against the Fight Irish on Thursday night. Texas finished with a 54 percent field goal percentage this afternoon.
It was better than the 34 percent they had in their previous game. It seems like Texas wins games with a field goal percentage over 40 percent. Texas returns home to take on Southern University on Dec. 11 at the Moody Center.
