3 takeaways from Texas's win over New Mexico State
By Brian Sweet
Texas Women's Basketball took on the New Mexico State Aggies at the Gulf Coast Showcase tonight. After a long time off between games, some rust showed in tonight's opening minutes. After a heart-to-heart talk from Vic Schaefer, the Longhorns took off and floored it past the Aggies.
The Longhorns would win 90-50 over the Aggies and advance to the next round. It was an excellent game for the Longhorns, where everyone got a chance to contribute.
Texas's leading scorer was sophomore forward Madison Booker, who scored 21 points. Booker had 13 points in the first quarter and helped the Longhorns separate themselves from the Aggies. I was excited to see Freshman forward Justice Carlton get some playing time in the first half tonight. She was the leading rebounder for most of the game tonight.
Now it's time to rest and prepare for tomorrow's game. Here are the three takeaways from tonight's win over the Aggies.
Takeaways from Texas Women's Basketball win over New Mexico State: 3. Madison Booker's strong first quarter
If it wasn't for Booker's 13 points in the first quarter, it would have been a closer game going into the second quarter. Schaefer is happy to have Booker's ability to find the basket as a weapon. Booker will be a huge factor against Notre Dame next week.
That is a game where she needs to be a force on the court. The Fighting Irish will be fired up because they lost to TCU earlier today. That game will test whether Booker can take on powerful SEC teams during conference play.
2. Justice Charlton getting minutes in the first half
Carlton's valuable playing time experience in the first half of the game was another key reason why the Longhorns won tonight. Charlton is becoming a fan-favorite of Schaefer to the point where she's getting minutes off the bench. Some freshmen don't get that opportunity at a Power Five school unless they have skill. I am seeing how many minutes she gets against Butler tomorrow night.
Texas Women's Basketball: 1. Free throw shooting
The Longhorns had a good night at the free throw line, leading to them winning the game tonight. The Longhorns finished the game 22-31 from the free throw line against the Aggies. Free throws can make or break a loss for a team.
The fact the Longhorns only missed two free throws was huge. They will need to make their free throws if they want to beat some of the elite SEC teams they will go up against this season. The Longhorns will return to the court tomorrow against Butler.
