Tre Johnson, G
The biggest story by far of the early regular season for the Longhorns is the record-breaking scoring pace that the true freshman and Naismith preseason watch list guard, Johnson, is on right now. After the season's first three games, Johnson leads the SEC in scoring, averaging over 25 points per game.
In the first game of his collegiate career in Vegas against Ohio State, Johnson scored the most points in a game by a Texas freshman since Kevin Durant (29).
Since then, Johnson has still averaged around two dozen points per game in the past two contests. He went off again for 28 points in Texas's sizable win over Houston Christian last week. And he had another 19-point effort in Texas's 100-point scoring outburst in the romping of Chicago State earlier this week.
It's hard not to think that Johnson would've continued his 20+ point scoring streak against Chicago State had the Longhorns not jumped out to such a commanding lead in the first half. Johnson only played 22 minutes in the win over Chicago State, compared to over 30 minutes in the season's first two games.
What's more, Johnson is scoring at an incredibly efficient pace with his shooting numbers from the field and from deep. Johnson is the only player in the SEC this season to be averaging over 20 points per game while shooting better than 50 percent from the field, 50 percent from beyond the arc, and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Johnson's other box score stats and advanced metrics also do good job showing the tremendous positive impact he's had on the Longhorns. He's doing a nice job on both ends of the floor, averaging three rebounds per game, three assists, one steal, and one block.
A good all-encompassing advanced metric that illustrates the huge impact Johnson has made on the offensive end, specifically, is his insane 15.2 offensive box plus/minus (top 10 in the NCAA).
