Seriously, when Texas fans woke up this morning, did they think Pete Kwiatkowski was going to be fired? Not only that, but no one probably even had a clue that Will Muschamp was being lined up to be the new defensive coordinator for Steve Sarkisian and Texas.
Texas makes jaw-dropping staff changes, bring back familiar face as DC
Well, that's exactly how things have played out. In a stunning turn of events, Muschamp is making the move to Austin and he's going to do his best to help Texas get back to the College Football Playoff next season. It's going to take some time for people to process this.
As it turns out, Texas wasn't the only school interested in Muschamp. According to reporter Zak Wolf, Syracuse and Fran Brown came calling trying to get Muschamp to join the Orange. He respectfully declined, but when Texas shows interest, it's clearly a game-changer:

Texas hiring Will Muschamp has shocked the college football world
Muschamp's coaching resume is quite impressive, with it of course including him running the show at South Carolina and Florida. Most recently, he was on staff at Georgia both as a defensive coordinator and an analyst. He was out of coaching in 2025, but the passion for the game hasn't gone anywhere.
This of course isn't the first time Muschamp will make the move to Austin, as he was previously with the Longhorns from 2008-10. There was a time when everyone thought he was going to take over the program for Mack Brown, but other plans arrived.
Despite that, Muschamp is now getting ready to return to a former stomping ground and the expectation is that he'll get to work immediately with the Longhorns. Everyone knew it was going to take a special offer to get Muschamp to put a headset back on.
With the greatest of respect for Fran Brown and Syracuse, getting a call from the Orange wasn't going to cut it. Joining Texas and Sark? Yeah, that was an easy decision for the veteran coach and it's one that has caught everyone by surprise.
