Last night, the Texas Longhorns pulled off one of the most impressive wins of the season (if not the most impressive), and afterwards, head coach Steve Sarkisian presented his argument for his team to earn a spot in the College Football Playoffs.
"If you really look at the body of work and you look at the [SEC] and what we have to go through every week, look at the non-conference schedule we play to go to Ohio State in Week 1 and lose by seven and we outgained them by nearly 200 yards, we have a really good football team," Sarkisian said. "It'd be a disservice to our sport if this team's not a playoff team when we went and scheduled that non-conference game.
"Because if we're a 10-2 team, it's not a question, but we were willing to go and play that game [at Ohio State]. So, is that what college football's about? Don't play anybody and just have a good record, or play the best and put the best teams in the playoff? We're one of the best teams."
After Texas's 10-point win over Texas A&M, his argument made perfect sense and has undeniably become a point of conversation as this year's Playoffs rapidly fly into focus, no matter how confusing that focus may be.
Higher-ranked teams rip into Steve Sarkisian
However, since his impassioned speech, teams have not shied away from throwing the Texas head coach under the bus or throwing a little shade in his direction as well.
After the BYU Cougars defeated fairly abysmal UCF Knights (who finished the year 5-7 overall and 2-7 against Big 12 opponents), to improve to 11-1, the program's social media team undeniably shared its distaste for Sarkisian's opinion.
"11-1. Headed to the Big 12 Championship. It would be a disservice to our sport if this team’s not a playoff team," the team posted on social media.
The direct rip off of Sarkisian's quote from the night before was direct disrespect to the Texas head coach and the Longhorns themselves, who battled through one of the toughest schedules of the season, while the Cougars played (mostly) cupcake teams in the Big 12.
Beyond the direct disrespect about what he said, keep in mind that Sarkisian played quarterback for none other than BYU during his collegiate career.

Yes, BYU has the better record and is ranked higher than Texas, but the Longhorns have the higher Strength-of-Schedule ranking (sixth) compared to the Cougars (28th), as well as the higher Football-Power-Index ranking (12th compared to 15th), according to ESPN.
If the Cougs deserve a spot in the CFP, then the Horns deserve a spot right alongside them, and no social media post should sway the committee in another direction.
