Breaking down 3 of the most impactful recruiters in Texas football history

Very few assistants have a better recruiting record than these coaches do at Texas.

Texas football has been on an absolute heater when it comes to recruiting over the past two months, so it feels like the perfect time to recognize some of the absolute best recruiters in program history. Though more assistant coaches have been great recruiters in the past, these three have brought in and developed some of the top Texas football players over the past 30 years.

Duane Akina (2001-2013, 2025)

Though Duane Akina and Steve Sarkisian didn't really mix that well, Akina was still one of the best recruiters and defensive back coaches in Longhorns history. It's even reasonable to say that he was one of the main reasons why Texas became known as "DBU" for a long period of time.

He recruited and developed the likes of Earl Thomas, Michael Huff, Aaron Ross, Michael Griffin, etc. at Texas, and Akina undoubtedly helped shape the Longhorns' defense into one of the most feared units in college football for over 10 years.

Bruce Chambers (1998-2014)

Texas high school coaching legend and one of Mack Brown's favorite assistants, Bruce Chambers, was an absolute stud for the Longhorns as both a coach and recruiter. He helped Ricky Williams, Cedric Benson, and Hodges Mitchell become some of the best ball-carriers in school history, and he played an enormous role in keeping the top in-state recruits "home" every year.

Mack Brown pretty much gave Chambers the freedom to go after any position when it comes to recruiting, not just running backs and tight ends. He played a crucial role in bringing Sergio Kindle, Hassan Ridgeway, Tray Allen, Mike Davis, John Chiles, and Darius White to Austin, to name a few, and he undoubtedly had a way with hammering home the "homegrown talent" narrative with recruits.

Jeff Banks (2021-present)

This may come as a shock to some, but I don't think Longhorn Nation realizes just how important Coach Banks is to Texas recruiting right now. Similar to how Coach Chambers was for Mack Brown, Jeff Banks is who Steve Sarkisian uses when he wants to "send in the big guns" for a top recruit.

Banks is one of the main reasons why players like Arch Manning and Colin Simmons are wearing burnt orange right now, and he was the main point of contact for other guys like D.J. Campbell, Anthony Hill Jr., Kelvin Banks Jr., and Malik Muhammad, to name a few of the recent stars.

If there's a top-flight recruit that the Longhorns are going after right now, Coach Banks is likely the lead man.
