CFP Committee has a bit more faith in Texas than even most Longhorn fans do

Looks like the Horns just need to win out to return to the Playoff...

And just like that, the Texas Longhorns are on track to return to the College Football Playoff after missing it for the first time in three years, and despite dropping two expected wins so far this season.

When the first CFP ranking was revealed on Tuesday night, the Horns rang in at No. 7 in the country, even ahead of the undefeated UCLA Bruins.

With the ranking, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is lined up to lead the Horns to the Playoff for the first time with Arch Manning as his quarterback... all they have to do is win out.

After the ranking was revealed, the actual bracket was shown, and the Boise State Broncos were the last team in (as the G6 team autobid), with the first two teams out being the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Tennessee Volunteers.

  1. Miami Hurricanes (8-0)
  2. Georgia Bulldogs (7-1)
  3. Utah Utes (8-0)
  4. Indiana Hoosiers (8-1)
  5. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-2)
  6. Kentucky Wildcats (7-1)
  7. Texas Longhorns (6-2)
  8. UCLA Bruins (8-0)
  9. BYU Cougars (7-1)
  10. Ole Miss Rebels (6-2)
  11. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-1)
  12. Boise State Broncos (7-1)

Of course, ahead of the CFP reveal, everyone had their own opinions, and even my projected ranking had the Horns a step lower than the CFP Committee placed them. So, maybe if Texas fans are some of the Longhorns' biggest doubters, but the Committee believes in the team, then they will be all right.

Longhorns primed for a rematch after first College Football Playoff reveal

Based on how the bracket works, with the conference champions of the Power Conferences taking up the four byes in the first round, the Horns would face none other than the Ole Miss Rebels in the first round, hosting them before the winner would face the Georgia Bulldogs in the second round.

Of course, the Bulldogs have been the bane of the Longhorns' existence over the last few seasons, with Georgia repeatedly beating Texas both in the regular season and the postseason. So, here's how the College Football Playoff bracket would look if the first ranking of the year holds out for the rest of the season:

FIRST ROUND

  • No. 12 Boise State Broncos at No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide
  • No. 9 BYU Cougars at No. 8 UCLA Bruins
  • No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats
  • No. 10 Ole Miss Rebels at No. 7 Texas Longhorns

SECOND ROUND

  • Boise State/Alabama vs. No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers
  • BYU/UCLA vs. No. 1 Miami Hurricanes
  • Notre Dame/Kentucky vs. No. 3 Utah Utes
  • Ole Miss/Texas vs. No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs

Then the winner of Boise State/Alabama versus Indiana would face the winner of the BYU/UCLA versus Miami game. Similarly, the winner of Notre Dame/Kentucky versus Utah would face the winner of Ole Miss/Texas versus Georgia.

For now, all Texas needs to do is take care of business, and that comes in the shape of defeating the Missouri Tigers, the LSU Tigers, the Arkansas Razorbacks, and the Texas A&M Aggies through the remainder of the regular season.
