Easton Royal's commit flip highlights disconnect between Steve Sarkisian and recruits

The inevitable happened last weekend when five-star wide receiver Easton Royal flipped his commitment from the Texas Longhorns to the Florida Gators.

While it had been a long time coming, the commitment flip still stung. Making matters worse is the message that Royal has been sharing ever since then: that Florida provided a better opportunity than the University of Texas.

Gators head coach Jon Sumrall attended Royal's high school game on Thursday night, just a handful of days after the wideout's new commitment. Afterward, Royal had nothing but praise for his future coach.

"It means a lot," Royal said of Sumrall being in attendance for his game. "It just goes to show why I changed my decision from Texas to Florida. [Sumrall] is a great guy, great coach. Coach Davis is a great guy, great coach... That's the type of guys I want to play for, be led by, look up to, and just get developed by."

If that is not a bad omen for Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian's ability to attract and retain top prospects, I am not sure what is...

It is a massive problem for Texas if Sarkisian cannot even retain the players he has already received commitments from, and it could spell ruin for the future of the Longhorns' recruiting efforts.

Could Easton Royal's flip be a sign of more to come?

The loss of Royal's commitment knocked Texas's recruiting class from the No. 7 group to No. 9 in the national recruiting rankings. With Royal already out the door and the ranking already heading south, should Sarkisian and the Horns be worried that more commits will follow suit?

The class features 21 top-tier recruits, including two five-star and 11 four-star prospects. Royal was Texas's top-rated commit, but he was not the only five-star, with interior offensive lineman Ismael Camara and running back Landen Williams-Callis still committed to the Horns.

If more commits follow in Royal's footsteps, the Horns could see their class continue to fall down the rankings.

The good news is that, currently, there are not any other prospects on flip watch. However, Sarkisian and the Horns now have to attract talent to fill in for his absence, something that may become harder with Royal singing the praises of another program.

Right now, it looks like Texas is targeting flip prospects Ji'Ayir Brown, who is committed to the Louisville Cardinals, and Jeremiah Douglas, who is committed to the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Additionally, the Horns hold commitments from four-star wideout Briceson Thrower and three-star wideout Kyron Brown, as well as highly touted tight ends Brock Williams and JT Geraci, adding to the downfield targets.

The loss of Royal stings, and his praising Sumrall so strongly only rubs salt in the wound, but Texas needs to start paying the utmost attention to the recruits who are still committed to and available for the Longhorns, or more could be headed out the door.
