Former Texas QB Sam Ehlinger signs one-year deal after receiving multiple offers

Sam Ehlinger once famously (or infamously) claimed that Texas was back. Now the former Longhorns quarterback has signed a new deal in the NFL.

It has been seven years since Texas quarterback took the mic and declared that the Longhorns were back after defeating the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2018 Sugar Bowl. Since then, he hasn't exactly had the NFL career that many fans hoped for, however, he is still earning new contracts in the league.

Most recently, Ehlinger signed a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos, led by legendary head coach Sean Payton, who coached fellow Westlake High School quarterback Drew Brees for years.

Ehlinger, who hasn't started throughout most of his professional career, will most likely back up former Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, who became Denver's starting QB during his rookie season (2024).

The Broncos' quarterback coach, Davis Webb, has been with Denver since 2023 after playing in the NFL for six seasons following his collegiate career, which he spent with the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the California Golden Bears.

Alongside Nix, Ehlinger will join forces with former Georgia QB Jarrett Stidham in the Broncos' quarterback room.

Ehlinger was the Horns' starting quarterback for four seasons (2017-20) and led Texas to XX bowl game victories, including the 2017 Texas Bowl, the 2018 Sugar Bowl, and the 2019 and 2020 Alamo Bowls.

During Ehlinger's career with the Longhorns, Texas won 32 games and lost just 18, almost entirely against conference (Big 12) opponents.

Since being selected 218th overall by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2021 NFL Draft, Ehlinger has spent the last four seasons as the Colts' backup quarterback. He has played in just seven games and completed 101 passes for 573 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.
