Hosting Easton Royal for Florida at Texas could make or break his commitment to the Horns

The saga that the recruitment of five-star wide receiver Easton Royal has become continued on Saturday, as the blue-chip prospect took a trip to Gainesville to see the Florida Gators secure a win over the then-No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels.

Royal told national recruiting insider Sam Spiegelman that he could "'100-percent' see himself playing at Florida after visiting this weekend," despite having committed to the Texas Longhorns nearly a year ago, adding that the wideout was reportedly very close to making his final decision.

With the threat that Florida presents as apparent as ever, the Horns have had to put up their defenses once again, but it could provide motivation to host Royal for another game-day visit when the Gators come to Texas in just a few weeks.

It could have a massive payoff if Royal is on Texas's sideline as it defeats the white-hot Gators, cementing his commitment to the Longhorns. Or... it could prove to be extremely costly if Florida pulled off a win in the Horns' own home.

Easton Royal's refusal to lock-in commitment has grown beyond exhausting

Over the last 10 months, Royal has done anything but back down from other schools trying to flip his commitment from Texas, taking numerous visits and praising other programs at the drop of a hat.

It's created quite a headache on the Longhorns' recruiting scene, and at this point, it almost feels more worthwhile for head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff to just let Royal go to one of the other teams trying to lure him in their direction.

While that included a trip to the 40 Acres when Texas defeated the then-No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes, it has also included the most recent trip to Florida and a scheduled trip to Baton Rouge when the Horns visit the LSU Tigers.

He is the highest-rated player in Texas's recruiting class of 2027 as a 98.43 overall prospect, ranked above five-star interior offensive lineman Ismael Camara (96.25). So, yes, losing him to another team would be a big hit for the Horns, but at this point, it feels like they are expending more energy on keeping Royal within their fold than he is worth.

A trip to Austin for the Florida-Texas game could, at the very least, seal the deal one way or another: he could lock in on his commitment to the Horns or could finally just flip to another to one of the teams coming after him.

At this point, the game against the Gators could simply provide the outcome that everyone has been impatiently waiting for over the last 10 months. It is just up to Sarkisian and the Texas recruiting staff to decide if they want to take that risk or not.
