Jim Schlossnagle may have just rounded out a College World Series-winning roster

This offseason, Jim Schlossnagle has built a monster of a roster for the Texas Longhorns. Yes, stronger even than the lineup that just carried the Horns back to the College World Series a few months ago.

Beyond landing the No. 4 recruiting class in the country, Schlossnagle also brought in a slew of top-tier prospects from the transfer portal.

Most recently, he received a commitment from Carlos Lugo, a rising star from the transfer portal, who just came off a dominant freshman season for the Campbell Fighting Camels.

The Camels finished the year with a highly respectable 41-17 overall record (for reference, Texas finished 46-15 overall), and Lugo was undeniably a massive part of the team's offensive dominance.

Batting .347 on the season, Lugo had nearly quadruple the amount of hits (77) as he did strikeouts (22), and racked up a resounding 38 RBIs, while scoring 49 runs of his own. Simply put, his offensive performances were the exact kind of thing Schlossnagle and the Horns have been looking for.

Texas Longhorns have landed their much-needed big bats

Lugo isn't the only big hitter that Schlossnagle has added to his arsenal this season, and that's exactly where the Horns fell short in their College World Series run in 2026.

Former UCLA Bruin outfielder Payton Brennan earned a .290 batting average last season, producing 63 hits to bring in 51 RBIs throughout the year. Texas Tech infielder Linkin Garcia, who is expected to play third base for the Horns in 2027, batted .338 at the plate for the Red Raiders, earning 78 hits for 59 RBIs.

In other words, there has been a clear focus for the Longhorns while putting in work in the transfer portal: scoring runs.

In its two losses to the Georgia Bulldogs at the 2026 College World Series, Texas was only able to produce one total run. Meanwhile, despite the Horns boasting some of the best pitchers in college baseball, the Dawgs amassed nine runs in their two wins.

Simply put, even after all of the regular-season success for the Longhorns, they simply couldn't keep pace with Georgia's offense. An offense, so you know, that was outscored 7-15 in its two meetings with the eventual National Champions, the Oklahoma Sooners.

Picking up players like Lugo, Garcia, and Brennan was exactly what Schlossnagle needed to do this offseason.

With the returns of beloved and dynamic players (on both sides of the ball) like Anthony Pack Jr., Ethan Mendoza, and more, Texas is undoubtedly set for succes next season. Now, all they need to do is put all of the pieces together.
