When Texas's star left tackle Trevor Goosby went down with an injury in the Longhorns' win over Ole Miss this past weekend, it was an undeniable cause for concern.

Then, one day later, reports from the 40 Acres said that Goosby would miss the remainder of the season with an unspecified knee injury. Today, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Goosby had undergone a "successful repair of his torn patellar tendon."

Thamel shared that orthopedic surgeon Dr. Daniel Cooper had performed Goosby's surgery and that the left tackle was expected to make a full recovery, with no residual side effects for his knee.

That's good news. In fact, it's great news. Goosby entered the season as one of the most highly regarded offensive tackles in the league and solidified his place as a first-round pick through the first six games of the season. The injury obviously caused knee-jerk reaction concerns that he may not be the same afterward.

However, based on Thamel's reporting and what he heard from Cooper, it sounds like Goosby could easily be back to his usual elite form as soon as doctors clear him for play. Unfortunately, that may not include suiting up for the Horns ever again.

Trevor Goosby's future in the 2027 NFL Draft practically cemented by injury news

While he was already projected to miss the rest of the season, if there had been concerns about his ability to maintain the highest level of performance once returning from injury and the subsequent surgery, then it could have been very possible that Goosby would return to Texas for another season, to shore up his place as a first-round pick once again.

However, with the news that he will make a "complete recovery with no residual effects," it is basically confirmed that his next destination will be the 2027 NFL Draft.

Of course, when Thamel first broke the news of Goosby's successful surgery, there was no timeline provided for when the left tackle could return to the field, but one could assume that with one of the best collegiate medical staffs in the country attending to him, it would be sooner rather than later.

Plus, the 2027 NFL Combine, the first step in the Draft process where a player's on-field abilities are actually visible, isn't until the beginning of March, more than four months after Goosby's initial injury.

A week ago, ESPN's Field Yates projected Goosby as a top-10 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, going eighth overall to the Houston Texans.

It is virtually impossible for a player of any caliber or at any position to pass up the opportunity to play at the next level, much less when you're projected time and time again as one of the first names off the board.

The 2027 NFL Draft will start on Thursday, April 29, and multiple Texas players are projected to hear their names called in the first round, not just Goosby. While he may never suit up in burnt orange again, he is undoubtedly a Longhorn Legend.
