3 reasons why Texas will return to the College Football Playoff
By Brian Sweet
Texas Football wants to return to the College Football Playoffs this season to prove last year wasn't a fluke. Last season, the Longhorns were inches from taking on the Michigan Wolverines in the College Football Playoff Finals.
With the Longhorns starting the season ranked fourth in the coaches poll, all eyes will be on Texas to begin the season. Let's look at three reasons why the Longhorns will likely be back in the College Football Playoffs.
Why Texas football will return to the College Football Playoff in 2024: 3. Field has expanded
The field for the College Football Playoff is expanding this season, which means the Longhorns have a better shot of making it. They won't need to be in the top four at the end of the season to make it in. With the new rules for the College Football Playoff, the Champions of the Power Five conferences will automatically make it in. That leaves seven high-ranking teams in the bracket to fill the remaining spots.
With how intense the SEC schedules are this season, teams that don't make the championship game in Atlanta, Georgia, have a good shot of making it in as a wildcard. The College Football Playoff Committee will examine the schedule strength before the overall record. This new rule should give Texas an advantage over teams from the Big 12 and Big 10. The Longhorns could lose two games and still make it in as a wildcard.
2. Longhorns should finish with a solid resume
The Longhorns should finish with a 10-2 or 9-3 record in their first season in the SEC. While this might not get them into the SEC Championship game to win the title, it should get the committee's attention. Some of the losses the Longhorns could have this season are to Georgia, Florida, and Oklahoma University.
The Longhorns have many returning players who want to return to the College Football Playoff.
1. Quinn Ewers leading the team
Quinn Ewers has much to prove if he wants to get drafted high in the NFL Draft. He will do everything possible to return to the College Football Playoffs. While Arch Manning is the future QB and should start next season, it's time for Ewers to prove himself as a leader.
You could tell at SEC media day he was ready to take the field against the Colorado State Rams. If the Longhorns make the College Football Playoff, Ewers will be the main reason they return.
