3 takeaways from Texas's first pads-on fall practice
Johntay Cook II and DeAndre Moore Jr. starting to establish themselves in starting receiver roles early this fall
We've talked so much about the strong impression that the receiving corps has made in the last week of fall practice for the Longhorns. Texas's depth and talent at wide receiver has come to light early in preseason camp, with the wideout depth going two or three teams deep in practice and specifically the one-on-one receiver drills.
Last week, we sung the praises of two new additions to the Texas wide receiver room this offseason, true freshman Ryan Wingo and senior grad transfer Silas Bolden. Wingo and Bolden were besting the Texas defensive backs consistently in one-on-one receiver drills and in team drills in practice late last week and over the weekend.
But I would be remiss if I didn't mention the progress that two of Texas's returning wideouts have made early in preseason camp. Sophomores Johntay Cook II and DeAndre Moore Jr. have consistently taken the first-team practice reps at wideout in individual and team drills since the first or second day of camp last week.
We've heard that Cook has looked the part of one of Texas's most dangerous playmakers when he gets the ball in space and one of the team's best route runners. Cook really got to show what he could do with some big plays that he made getting the ball out in space with the offense reportedly (per Inside Texas) running at a "lightning" pace in 11-on-11 work today.
One setback, though, for Cook on Monday's fall practice was an untimely drop he had in team drills.
Moore, meanwhile, has done a nice job while taking the first-team practice reps out of the slot at wideout early in preseason camp. He's been arguably Texas's best outside blocking receiver at the outset of preseason camp. And Moore has looked natural with his route running and in-route adjustments working between the numbers in team drills this fall in the last few practices.
