Colin Simmons is the best true freshman in college football

This was easily the best performance of the season so far for Texas's pass rushers in the win over Mississippi State this weekend. Texas made life difficult for true freshman Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren in the second half, registering multiple sacks while collapsing the pocket quickly.

Texas registered a season-high six sacks against Mississippi State this weekend.

True freshman edge rusher Colin Simmons continues to perform at an All-SEC-type of caliber for Texas's pass rush in the past few weeks. Simmons was a shop-wrecker for Texas's pass rush against Van Buren and the Bulldogs offense in this game.

Simmons registered the first multi-sack game of his collegiate career. One of his two sacks on the day was a massive third-down stop for the Longhorns where Simmons shot out of a cannon for his get-off at the line of scrimmage to beat the opposing offensive tackle in the blink of an eye.

However, Simmons made a big impact on this game in more ways than one in just the pass rush. He was an effective run defender, setting the edge, and collected multiple tackles against Mississippi State's offense. Simmons finished up this game with multiple run stops for the first time in his collegiate career, along with a career-high seven tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks.

Simmons is clearly showing plenty of confidence for the Longhorns' squad entering the Red River Rivalry game in a couple of weeks against the Oklahoma Sooners in Dallas. He said he thinks Texas will "dominate" OU in Red River in two weeks.

"They got a good squad this year. A lot of people on that team that I know. I feel like we’re going to dominate them. But at the end of the day, we got to trust in our coaching and just get better each and every day."

Simmons is the highest-graded true freshmen among defensive players in the P4 after five weeks.

It's unreasonable for Simmons to be this confident in his ability for Texas's defense this season. He's making a massive impact as one of Texas's biggest stars on the defensive side of the ball, just five weeks into his college career for UT's defense.
