Running back depth is a major concern entering the SEC

There was some expected, and additional unexpected movement on the running back depth chart for Tashard Choice and the Longhorns in Saturday's fall scrimmage. As expected, junior Jaydon Blue took the scrimmage reps with the first-team offense out of the backfield in the scrimmage this weekend.

Sophomore Tre Wisner also worked in with the first and second-team running back reps in the scrimmage yesterday, rotating between both offensive backfields in different situations.

It sounds like Blue and Wisner were pretty consistent in the ground and receiving games for the first and second-team offenses yesterday. There were mixed results for the running backs based on various scrimmage reports and reactions in the media since the festivities concluded yesterday afternoon.

But the big plays from the running backs were greatly limited since the defensive line, and linebackers were so formidable, getting different pressure looks on the offense and flying around the football with all the experienced guys in the defensive front in the scrimmage.

It also makes sense to me that Texas wasn't trying to get overly physical running the ball inside during the first fall scrimmage this weekend.

The positives that emerged for the true freshman running backs, Jerrick Gibson and Christian Clark, during yesterday's scrimmage namely concerned their confidence and versatility out of the backfield. Gibson and Clark both had some good and physical runs between the tackles. But it sounds like each had some ball security issues, fumbling around the goal line during the situational portion of the scrimmage.

It's also noteworthy that second-year linebacker Derion Gullette took reps on both sides of the ball as a linebacker with the third-team defense and an emergency running back on offense. Walk-on Colin Page also gave the Longhorns some good reps as one of the reserve running backs yesterday in the scrimmage.
