4 priority 2025 recruits Texas whiffed on this week
Texas football has had a very tough week on the recruiting trail in the 2025 class with announcements in the last couple of days. Starting with defensive tackle recruiting in the 2025 class, Texas looked like it was in a good spot to reel in at least one of two key out-of-state targets for this cycle.
Key decisions from 2025 defensive recruits go against Texas football this week
Recruiting on the defensive side of the ball in general has been a real struggle for the Longhorns this weekend. Texas has to reset the big board on the recruiting trail at multiple key positions on defense in the 2025 class after this week's commitment results.
Dijon Lee, CB (Alabama commit)
First, I wanted to cover the recruitment that probably hurt Texas the least on the recruiting trail in the 2025 class this week. Five-star Mission Viejo (CA) cornerback Dijon Lee committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide over the Georgia Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies, Washington Huskies, and the Longhorns on June 28.
Despite taking a midweek official visit to Texas last week, Lee's recruitment wasn't realistically in play for the Longhorns this summer. Texas could still recruit Lee through the finish line on signing day to play the long game we know Steve Sarkisian likes to strategize on the trail.
Dorian Brew, CB (Oregon commit)
I think it's more of a setback with Texas losing out on five-star Conroe (TX) cornerback Dorian Brew to the Oregon Ducks compared to losing Lee to Alabama this week. Brew was a key target for the Longhorns in the 2025 class this summer.
He had a great visit to Texas early this offseason and the Longhorns have remained heavily involved in Brew's recruitment in the last few months. But Oregon and head coach Dan Lanning have really bowed up on the recruiting trail to land some top-notch blue-chip defensive prospects in the 2025 class this week.
Josiah Sharma, DL (Oregon commit)
The biggest loss for Texas defensive line recruiting this week was Sacramento (CA) Folsom four-star Josiah Sharma committing to Oregon over the Longhorns and Alabama on June 29. Texas was in a good spot for Sharma in the days leading up to his announcement for his commitment on Friday afternoon.
Oregon is having a big week on the recruiting trail on the defensive side of the ball for the 2025 class. The Ducks looked to be in third place in this recruitment behind Texas and Alabama heading into Sharma's Friday decision. But this is how fast things can change in recruiting in the modern day and age of NIL in college sports.
Texas and Kenny Baker must land at least three or four defensive tackle commits in the 2025 class to restock the cupboard for depth along the defensive line in the SEC in the future. The staff will continue to recruit Sharma through the finish line on signing day.
Myron Charles, DL (Florida State commit)
Four-star Port Charlotte (FL) defensive tackle Myron Charles committed to the Florida State Seminoles over Texas on June 29, making Texas's woes in defensive line recruiting on that day go from bad to worse.
Texas was hoping to get one or both of Charles and/or Sharma committed to the 2025 class this week. The two out-of-state blue-chip defensive linemen officially visited Texas during the same weekend in early June.
Baker and the Longhorns losing out on both Sharma and Charles makes it so that hanging onto the commitment of four-star Brandon Brown along with landing in-state four-star DJ Sanders essential in the 2025 class.
