No. 1 Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian open up SEC play this upcoming weekend at home against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Sep. 28. Texas had an extremely successful non-conference play, going undefeated in four games.

Multiple Texas football players could return from injury this weekend for the SEC opener vs. Mississippi State

During non-conference play, Sarkisian and the Longhorns had to fight through some injury issues to come out of the first four weeks with convincing double-digit victories. Texas's injury issues go back to fall camp, especially at the running back position. But we've seen the injury bug bite other position groups on each side of the ball for the Longhorns in the last two or three weeks.

Texas's talent and depth at nearly all position groups on both sides of the ball that this staff have built on this roster in the past few years has kept this team performing at a high level while fighting through injuries with some units early this season.

Sarkisian and staff will release the first injury report of the season for the Mississippi State game for the start of SEC play this week. That will be the firm indication of where Texas is at regarding injury updates on each side of the ball before conference play kicks off this weekend.

Here are five key injury updates for the Longhorns entering the SEC opener in Week 5 against Mississippi State.

Tre Wisner, RB

Sophomore running back Tre Wisner missed Texas's 51-3 win over the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks last weekend due to an injury he suffered against the UTSA Roadrunners in Week 3. Wisner's injury was described as a "tweak" after Texas's win over UTSA a couple of weeks ago.

Wisner hasn't played any snaps for the Longhorns since the first half against UTSA. In his absence, junior running back Jaydon Blue and true freshman Jerrick Gibson took the bulk of the carries for Texas's ground game against ULM. His status remains uncertain for the SEC opener this weekend against Mississippi State.
