FSU proves Quinn Ewers' point after upset loss to GA Tech

Quinn Ewers shows why it is important for even the selection committee to see context as it is for the College Football Playoff deciding process for the postseason.

Earlier this week, Texas football redshirt junior starting quarterback Quinn Ewers sent some shots at the Florida State Seminoles. In an interview with Fox Digital, Ewers said that the College Football Playoff selection committee made the right choice last postseason by leaving Florida State out of the four-team field.

Texas football QB Quinn Ewers has his point about Florida State proven just days after remarks he made about the CFP during a Fox interview

"It leaves a little bit more room for error. I think it’s what college football has needed."

Ewers made the point that, despite winning the ACC Championship and going undefeated entering the postseason, it wasn't the same Florida State team without their starting quarterback, Jordan Travis. Travis's season came to an unfortunate early end last year after he suffered a knee injury late in the regular season for Florida State.

"It’s definitely a tough choice to make, especially with how the SEC Championship Game went, and Florida State and Jordan Travis getting hurt, in their minds, they were just picking who was playing the best football right now."

When it was all said and done, Ewers' point held up with the result not only in Florida State's New Year's Six Bowl game, where it was blown out by the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs by a whopping 60 points, but also in the regular season opener on Aug. 24 in Week 0.

Florida State was upset by the unranked ACC foe Georgia Tech in their opener in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday afternoon after a game-winning walk-off field goal from the Yellow Jackets kicker.

Head coach Mike Norvell and the Noles have now lost two games in a row to teams from the Peach State since it was left out of the Playoff last year. Ewers is showing that his point stands that the Longhorns and the other three teams selected for the CFP field last postseason were the right choices.

The Alabama Crimson Tide were selected for the Playoff in the four-seed slot last year over Florida State. That decision did go against some of the selection committee's criteria that it put on their own website that it said was used for their process in deciding who makes it into the Playoff.

But Alabama put up a great fight in the CFP semifinals after winning the SEC Championship Game, nearly defeating the eventual National Champion Michigan Wolverines at the Rose Bowl.

"I think it’s gonna give a lot more teams opportunities to win a national championship, and I think it’s gonna be great for the fans to see their teams making college football runs."

It's also valid for Ewers to bring up the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff field as something that will make Florida State's grip last year to get in the CFP as moot now with the expanded field this postseason.

While Florida State's loss to Georgia Tech in the season opener in Week 0 today could've already eliminated them from the Playoff conversation, the point still holds up that the relevancy in the postseason for teams ranked in the high single digits is still there for this season.

This is definitely coming from a biased source saying that the Longhorns and Crimson Tide both belonged in the Playoff, while Florida State didn't. But you have to take things like this into context and decide whether it is important for the entertainment value that the selection committee is able to provide for the Playoff to actually put the best teams in.
