Head coach David Pierce and No. 15 Texas baseball (6-1, 0-0 Big 12) round out their eight-game homestand to start the 2024 season on Feb. 27 at the Disch against the St. John's (MN) Johnnies (2-0, 0-0 MIAC).

Texas has won five consecutive games entering this one-game midweek matchup against St. John's. That includes a three-game weekend series sweep where the Longhorns pitching staff completely shut out the Cal Poly Mustangs.

This is the final tune up game for the Longhorns before facing its first power conference competition of the regular season. Pierce and the Longhorns battle two top 10 opponents this coming weekend in the Astros Foundation College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Texas is 2-2 in the all-time series against St. John's. All four meetings between the Longhorns and Johnnies have come in the postseason, including in the College World Series in 1949 and 1966.

Texas: Max Grubbs, RHP (1-0, 3.86 ERA)

St. John's: Evan Chaffee, LHP (0-0, 54.00 ERA)

Sophomore right-hander Max Grubbs get his first career start for the Longhorns against St. John's. Grubbs registered his first win of the season in Texas's Feb. 16 7-3 win over the San Diego Toreros at the Disch.

Grubbs has appeared in three games this season, registering four strikeouts, five hits allowed, and two earned runs over 4.2 innings on the mound. He most recently appeared in Texas's Feb. 25 win over Cal Poly, allowing one hit and no earned runs in one inning of work out of the bullpen.

Grubbs will face redshirt freshman left-hander and former Alabama transfer Evan Chaffee. The 6-foot-2 New York native Chaffee didn't appear in any games for the Tide during his true freshman campaign last season.

Chaffee struggled in his only appearance on the mound for the Johnnies this season, allowing six earned runs over one inning in a loss to the Houston Cougars.
