Per On3's Hayes Fawcett, the LSU Tigers have flipped four-star Missouri City (TX) Fort Bend Hightower defensive back Kade Phillips from Texas football on Aug. 18. Phillips had originally committed to Texas back on July 6.

Texas football loses commitment from 4-Star DB Kade Phillips to LSU

Phillips committed to the Longhorns over LSU when he initially announced in early July.

LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond never threw in the towel in this recruitment, even after Phillips gave his pledge to the Longhorns a little over one month ago.

The Tigers pitched Phillips to play at the cornerback position, which is what he prefers to play at the next level in the secondary. Texas had originally pitched Phillips to play safety with the Longhorns' secondary.

Phillips' decommitment brings Texas back down to one true defensive back commitment in the 2025 class late this summer on the recruiting trail. Texas's only remaining defensive back commit in the 2025 class is three-star Missouri City (TX) Fort Bend Marshall cornerback Caleb Chester.

Texas does have a chance to quickly bounce back from this defensive back recruiting loss in the 2025 class in the next couple of weeks, though. The elite five-star Galveston (TX) Ball athlete/safety Jonah Williams is scheduled to commit on Aug. 24.

The Longhorns have been trending positively in that recruitment for Williams in the last few weeks. Williams will decide predominantly between the Texas A&M Aggies, LSU, and Texas next Saturday.

The other anticipated late-summer decision that the Longhorns are involved in for key defensive back targets in the 2025 class is the underrated three-star Ruston (LA) cornerback Aidan Anding. LSU flipping Phillips from Texas probably helps the Longhorns with Anding's recruitment.

Since Phillips is going to play corner at LSU, Texas could have a better shot at landing Anding. Granted, LSU and the Arkansas Razorbacks are still very much involved in Anding's recruitment approaching what is expected to be a late-August or early September decision from the Louisiana native corner.

After Phillips' decommitment on Aug. 18, Texas's 2025 recruiting class ranks No. 12 in the nation in the 247Sports Composite, with 16 commitments.
