Since early in the second quarter of the matchup at home in Week 3 against the UTSA Roadrunners, Texas football hasn't had their usual starting quarterback. Redshirt junior quarterback Quinn Ewers suffered an abdominal strain injury in the first half of Texas's win over UTSA a few weeks ago.

Steve Sarkisian says Texas football QB Quinn Ewers has "improved every day" in practice this week

Ewers' status remains questionable for his injury status this weekend on the SEC-mandated injury report for the opener to conference play this weekend at home against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Sep. 28.

During a Zoom press conference with the media on Sep. 26, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said Texas will wait until Sep. 27 to make a decision regarding whether Ewers will get the start at quarterback in the SEC opener against Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon.

"We’re going to decide on the quarterback thing tomorrow. It won’t be a secret. We’re not trying to pull the wool over anybody’s eyes. Just want to give Quinn every opportunity to see if he’s ready to play and what he looks like. I’d say he’s improved every day. I think Arch has had a very good week."

Ewers has "improved every day" in practice this week while working his way back from the abdominal strain injury, per Sarkisian.

Sarkisian also mentioned in his press conference on Thursday that redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning and true freshman Trey Owens have both looked good in practice this week.

Manning led the Longhorns to a win in the first start of his collegiate career at quarterback last weekend, in a dominant 51-3 effort against the UL-Monroe Warhawks at home. Manning also completed 9-of-12 pass attempts for over 200 pass yards and five total touchdowns against UTSA after coming in the game after Ewers suffered the injury in the first half in Week 3.

In Ewers' three starts this season, he's completed 58-of-79 pass attempts (73.4 completion percentage) for 691 pass yards, eight passing touchdowns, and two interceptions.

We will continue to follow for updates to Ewers' injury status in the last 48 hours or so before kickoff against Mississippi State this weekend, with the starting QB decision coming up tomorrow for Sarkisian.
