Texas baseball sweeps Kansas to close out the regular season

The Longhorns showed their grit to pull out three straight close wins to sweep the Jayhawks this weekend. All three wins over the Jayhawks this weekend came by a margin of two runs or fewer for the Longhorns.

Kansas gave Texas another late-game scare on May 18, pulling off a late rally with the bats to come close to tying things up in the top of the eighth inning. Despite holding what seemed like a comfortable 8-1 lead entering the top of the seventh inning, Texas's bullpen struggled in the late innings to close out the victory.

Lebarron Johnson Jr. held up his end of the bargain, giving the Longhorns six quality innings of work on the mound. Johnson allowed just one earned run on five hits while striking out seven Kansas batters.

This was a much-needed quality outing for Johnson on the mound. It's his first win in nearly a month. Johnson's last win came over the TCU Horned Frogs at home at the Disch on April 21.

Gage Boehm notched his eighth save of the season, despite giving up two earned runs in 2.1 innings on the mound to close out the win.

Boehm was bailed out late in the top of the ninth inning with two outs by Will Gasparino, who made a highlight-reel catch to get the win officially sealed.

Texas's bats showed up in the most emphatic way during the series for the win in Game 3. Led by designated hitter Kimble Schuessler, Texas amassed nine runs and double-digit hits to give the pitching staff the necessary run support to pull out the two-run win.

Schuessler came through with an important fourth-inning home run for the Longhorns. He later drove in another run on a single to right in the bottom of the fifth. After getting on base in the fifth, Casey Borba drove Schuessler home for what would be the game-tying run.

All Texas batters in the order from 3-6 drove in multiple runs in this game. The top two batters in the order, Jalin Flores and Jared Thomas, combined for three hits and three runs scored.

The three-game series sweep of the Jayhawks has effectively locked up second place in the Big 12 regular season standings for the Longhorns. Texas has won four straight to help lock up the two-seed for the Big 12 Tournament next week.

Head coach David Pierce's squad finishes the regular season with a record of 35-20 (20-10 Big 12) after the big sweep of the Jayhawks this weekend. Texas will be looking to take that momentum into the Big 12 Tournament and the postseason in the next couple of weeks.
