Per Inside Texas/On3's Joe Cook, third-year Texas football edge rusher J'Mond Tapp entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on April 17.

Texas football loses EDGE J'Mond Tapp to the transfer portal

Tapp has two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-3 and 265-pound edge rusher Tapp spent the last two seasons at Texas, registering nine combined tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, four defensive stops, and seven quarterback pressures. Tapp played over 100 defensive snaps over nine games in his two seasons at Texas.

In 2023, Tapp played a career-high 98 defensive snaps and seven games, including five appearances in Big 12 contests. He registered four defensive stops, 1.5 tackles for loss, four quarterback pressures, and one QB hit over the seven total games he played last fall.

Tapp committed to Texas over the LSU Tigers as a four-star recruit from Donaldsonville (LA) Ascension Catholic High School in the 2022 class. He was one of the top blue-chip prospects along the front seven from Louisiana in the 2022 recruiting class, and his hometown was roughly an hour from Baton Rouge, where LSU's campus is.

Tapp was the No. 107 ranked prospect nationally in the 2022 class in the 247Sports Composite, No. 11 edge rusher, and No. 9 from Louisiana.

The 45-day spring transfer portal window opened for underclassmen to officially enter on April 16. Since the start of the week on April 15, three Texas players have entered the portal, bringing down the scholarship total on the roster to 85.

The three Longhorns players who entered the transfer portal this week are Tapp, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Payton Kirkland, and redshirt freshman edge rusher Billy Walton.

Since Texas is down to the scholarship limit of 85 players on the roster after Tapp entered the portal on April 17, Texas is getting closer to where it needs to be regarding the numbers situation to add key transfers this spring. Texas is looking to add at least one impact defensive tackle via the portal and potentially a transfer punter during the spring window.
