Texas EDGE Trey Moore has been a 'freak' in fall practice

Few players have stood out along the defensive front to start fall practice for Texas compared to redshirt junior UTSA EDGE transfer Trey Moore.

The fourth and final practice of the first week of preseason camp for Texas football was held at DKR on Saturday night (Aug. 3). Texas put shoulder pads on for the first time in fall practice on Aug. 3 for the most physical day of team drills so far in preseason camp.

Texas football has a true stud among the leaders of the EDGE position in Trey Moore this fall

This wasn't the first full-pads practice, but it sounds like it was the most competitive and energetic day of fall drills of the four practices thus far in camp.

The Texas defense had its best showing in team drills since preseason camp began on July 31 from what we've heard from various practice reports and discussion in the last 24 hours. Texas not only got good pressure on the quarterbacks in the situational scrimmages and simulated live-game settings, but also got a couple of picks.

Redshirt freshman Arch Manning and true freshman Trey Owens were the two quarterbacks who were picked off in the scrimmage-type team drills on Saturday night.

Among the pass rushers who made a significant impact on the quarterbacks in practice yesterday, true freshman Colin Simmons and redshirt junior Trey Moore made big impressions. OTF's Bobby Burton reported on Aug. 4 (premium content) that Simmons gave Texas's offensive tackles some real fits trying to block him in pass pro this weekend.

Moore might've been the most effective front seven player for the Texas defense in team drills yesterday. It also sounds like Moore was very good in one-on-one pass rush drills on Friday and Saturday in practice.

One team source reportedly said that Moore "is a freak" from how he's looked early in preseason camp. He also looked the part of an extremely disruptive and athletic edge rusher/outside backer as an early enrollee during spring drills.

Something that really caught my eye in this practice report was the fact that Moore was giving junior offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. some issues in one-on-one pass rush drills. I've never heard of a Texas edge player giving Banks problems on a consistent basis on one-on-one and team drills in practice, since he's always had the advantage with his size and proficiency in pass pro in the last few years.

Moore has made it clear in the first week of fall practice for the Longhorns that he is going to be a true force for this front seven in the SEC this season. He was a tremendous addition from the transfer portal and UTSA for the Longhorns ahead of the 2024 season.

He'll be able to play at different spots along the defensive front for Pete Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns this fall to give opposing offensive lines and quarterbacks real issues at the line of scrimmage.
