Texas flips priority 4-Star DL Myron Charles from Florida St
Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian had a huge day on the field and the recruiting trail on Sep. 7. Not only did No. 3 ranked Texas handily defeat the defending National Champion and No. 10 ranked Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, but they also flipped a big-time defensive line prospect in the 2025 class from another P4 conference foe.
4-Star DL priority Myron Charles flips from Florida State to Texas football
Per On3's Hayes Fawcett, the highly touted four-star Port Charlotte (FL) defensive lineman Myron Charles flipped his commitment from the Florida State Seminoles to Texas on Sep. 7. The announcement of Charles flipping his commitment from the Seminoles to the Longhorns almost literally came right after the end of the game for Texas's double-digit road victory over Michigan this afternoon.
Defensive line is a huge positional need for the Longhorns in the 2025 class, and they've landed a couple of tremendous prospects since the summer to add quality bodies in the trenches starting next year.
Texas now has two big wins on the recruiting trail with top out-of-state defensive tackle prospects from the 2025 class. In the last couple of months, the Longhorns have flipped two blue-chip defensive line commits from other P4 programs, including Charles from Florida State and Folsom (CA) four-star Josiah Sharma from the Oregon Ducks back in late July.
Charles and Sharma both officially visited Texas back in June. These two are arguably the two top out-of-state priorites along the interior defensive line for Kenny Baker and the Longhorns in the 2025 class. Charles is also scheduled to take a return trip to Texas for the mid-October matchup at DKR against the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs in SEC play in Austin.
Once Sharma flipped from Oregon to Texas, and Florida State struggled to start the 2024 season, it looked like a real possibility that the Longhorns got both blue-chip defensive tackles in the boat in the 2025 class by the time signing day arrived in early December.
After Charles committed to Florida State over the Longhorns, Florida Gators, and Miami Hurricanes back in late June, Texas's staff never threw in the towel in this recruitment. Texas stayed in consistent communication with Charles, effectively chipping away at his commitment to Florida State in the past few months before officially flipping his pledge this weekend in the 2025 class.
The 6-foot-4 and 305-pound defensive lineman from Florida, Charles brings good length, size, and quickness at the point of attack for the Longhorns in the trenches. From a technique and pad level perspective, Charles still needs some refinement and work before he's ready to consistently make an impact on the field in college at Texas.
Charles projects as a multi-year contributor and potential high-level starter as a three-tech defensive tackle at Texas in the SEC. He ranks as the No. 134 prospect nationally in the 2025 class in the 247Sports Composite, No. 17 defensive lineman, and No. 22 from Florida.
