Texas is a game up on Cal Poly, Horns and Mustangs set to play Game 2 of series

After a low-scoring but exciting opening game, the Texas Longhorns and Cal Poly Mustangs are set to play in game two of the series.

The No. 16 Horns hosted the Mustangs in game one of the series on Friday evening. RHP Lebarron Johnson Jr. opened the game and pitched a ridiculous 8 innings against Cal Poly.

Earning 8 strikeouts and allowing just 2 hits, LBJ earned the win for the Horns as Texas brought in 2 runs. After four scoreless innings, Texas broke the barrier during the bottom of the fifth, scoring the first run of the game.

Sophomore Jared Thomas singled to third to bring the Horns to a 1-0 lead. Three innings later, Peyton Powell doubled to left center to boost the Longhorns’ lead to 2 runs.

With 5 hits and 0 errors, Texas earned its fourth home win of the season.

Texas immediately started prepping for the next day as the Mustangs are looking for revenge on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Charlie Hurley is set to be the starting pitcher in game two of the series as the two teams return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Horns hope to reheat their bats and earn a few more runs against the Mustangs before turning their attention to the final game of the series and eventually St. Johns.

Following Friday’s matchup, the Horns sit at 4-1 overall, their only loss was to San Diego in the midst of a three-game series.

Texas is scheduled to honor LHP Justin Simmons who played for the Longhorns from 2001-04 and earned 66 career starts for the team. The honoring of Simmons is a part of Texas' TraDISCHion series during its home games.
