Texas football landed a commitment from one of its top priority in-state wide receiver targets in the 2025 class on Aug. 7, the elite Sachse (TX) five-star Kaliq Lockett. The No. 5 wide receiver recruit in the nation in the 2025 class in the 247Sports Composite committed to Texas over the Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas A&M Aggies, LSU Tigers, and Florida State Seminoles early on Wednesday afternoon.

Elite in-state 2025 WR Kaliq Lockett kicks off Texas football's wideout class with a bang in early August

Lockett is the first wide receiver to commit to the Longhorns in the 2025 class. He was one of Texas's big three five-star wide receiver targets that head coach Steve Sarkisian and wide receivers coach Chris Jackson were looking to haul in as part of an elite potential wideout haul for this cycle.

Texas still has a shot to pull an insane wide receiver haul for the class of 2025, with the possibility that they land the five-star duo at the position of Lockett and Jacksonville (FL) Mandarin five-star Jaime Ffrench.

Sarkisian and Jackson have really made Lockett's recruitment a top priority for them in the 2025 class since the spring evaluation period. Texas really put its foot on the gas in this recruitment and took the lead ahead of Alabama and Florida State during summer official visits in June.

Proximity to home and his natural scheme fit in Sarkisian's offense at the wide receiver position were big factors that led him to commit to the Longhorns late this summer on the recruiting trail. He's built great relationships with Sarkisian and Jackson.

Lockett has also become close with some of the other top Texas recruits in the 2025 and 2026 classes, including blue-chip quarterback commits KJ Lacey and Dia Bell.

Texas adds a big-time threat at boundary WR in the 6-foot-2 Lockett

At around 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-3 and 180-pounds, with a 6-foot-7 wingspan, Lockett is a fantastic fit for the Longhorns at boundary receiver. He does a tremendous job of using his length and strong hands to his advantage to make those difficult contested 50/50 catches on the boundary.

Lockett's ability to high-point the football is second to none among the lengthier wide receiver in-state in the 2025 class. His verticality and body control are second to none.

Lockett pairs his size and strength on the outside with a fluid stride and a diverse route tree to make him a versatile wideout who can be motioned around pre-snap from the boundary to other spots out wide.

The short-area quickness and acceleration Lockett brings are sneaky for a wideout of his size and stature. He's registered around a 23-second 200-meter time in relays during his junior season running track and field for Sachse High School. Lockett also participates in the long jump and triple jump for Lockett, showing his all-around athleticism away from the football field.

Areas of improvement

The two key areas of improvement for Lockett to focus on before he arrives at Texas in a little under 18 months from now are his technical route running and his top end speed. Part of the reason why Lockett chose the Longhorns today was getting to work with Jackson on the technical aspects of his game.

Jackson has worked with NFL-caliber wideouts at multiple levels of football as a wide receivers coach, with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also coached up three NFL Draft picks at wide receiver for the Longhorns last season in the trio of Adonai Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, and Jordan Whittington.

Projection and fit at Texas

We've mentioned multiple times already that Lockett is a natural fit for Sarkisian's offense on the boundary. Per Horns247, Lockett plans to enroll early to participate in spring camp next offseason.

If Lockett follows through with those plans and enrolls early next spring semester at Texas, he should be able to establish himself as a potential immediate impact wideout for the Longhorns in 2025.
