Texas women's basketball and head coach Vic Schaefer are firmly in the running for the No. 1 recruit in the nation in the class of 2025, five-star Lubbock (TX) Monterey guard Aaliyah Chavez. After Chavez cut her top list of schools down to six a couple of months ago, she is now down to just five finalists as of late September.

On3's Talia Goodman reported on Sep. 24 that Chavez's top five schools now include the Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Tech Red Raiders, South Carolina Gamecocks, UCLA Bruins, and Texas. The LSU Tigers and head coach Kim Mulkey were dropped from Chavez's finalists after making her original top six list in July.

Texas has been one of the frontrunners in this recruitment for Chavez since early in the summer. Texas Tech and Texas are now reportedly considered to be the top two schools in the race to land Chavez's commitment this fall on the recruiting trail.

Schaefer and staff have stayed in constant communication with Chavez since Texas was one of the first major programs to offer her.

"They were one of my first offers too, so just keeping them in. They’re close to home. They recruit me well. I think I talk to them almost every day too and they always have high energy."

There is still some time left in this recruitment for the things to change among Chavez's frontrunners, though. She has official visits scheduled over the next to see Austin and Norman, respectively.

NIL is also set to play a big factor in this recruitment for Chavez. Texas Tech has shown that it will make significant NIL commitments over the past few months, and that could keep them in the running for Chavez's recruitment this fall.

But if one thing has remained constant in this recruitment, it has been the fact that Texas ranked among her top two or three frontrunners for the last four to six months at least.
